Wales premier provider of training and development

Our aim is to help people of all ages who struggle with words and numbers in their everyday lives. We do this by providing qualified tutors who understand these difficulties and are able to help, guide and support each individual to achieve a level where they are confident and able to move on in their lives.

In December 2005 Tydfil Training was one of a select few training providers to achieve the prestigious Quality Mark

Why does Tydfil Training consider basic skills so important?

Basic skills are in use every day. Tasks that require basic skills include:

  • Reading and understanding documents, such as the small print on such things as loan agreements, contracts of employment and legal documentation.

  • Filling out an application form or sending an e-mail writing a letter to apply for employment

  • Reading train and bus timetables

  • Understanding the text on internet websites like this

  • Number helps you check your change when buying in shops and cafes, and dealing with electricity, gas  and garage bills.

So, what are your aims?

If you've done the assessment and found that you'd benefit from some basic skills training, it's time to decide what you want to get out of the course.

There are many different basic skills courses, so before deciding which one is for you it's important we are sure what your aims are.

You may want to start at an introductory level, or just brush up your English, Welsh or maths.

You might be ok at reading but need help with your spelling.

Others just want help with specific skills like writing a business letter or working with numbers that their job requires them to use.

You should identify why you want to improve your basic skills - is it for social reasons or for employment?  Many feel both will benefit

Now we will think about how you learn best. You might like to learn in a group or learn on your own with a tutor and self-study programme. You might like to get more personalised help from one-to-one tuition.

Identifying your learning aims from the very start will enable you to choose the course that's best for you. Your tutor will be able to help you clarify your learning aims, preferred learning style and what type of qualification you'd like to get.

First steps

Basic skills assessment
If you feel you need some help with your basic skills, the first step is to take an assessment.

This is not as scary as it sound, but it's just to identify which areas you need the most help with, if at all.

Taking an initial assessment helps our tutors establish whether someone needs help with their basic skills. If you do then we will help by undertaking a slightly more in-depth assessment to focus in on your strengths and weaknesses. This enables our tutors to design a programme suitable to you exact needs.
