Wales premier provider of training and development

Employers are continually asking for "work skills" from employees. These include being able to read, write and explain situations, use number skills required for their daily tasks, use basic computers programmes, work in teams and on their own, solve problems within their authority of their job description and, be able to identify areas where they need to learn.

Tydfil Training provides training and development of these skills

There are six key skills, each of which is available at levels 1 to 4. The three key skills qualifications are:

  • Communication
  • Application of Number
  • Information Technology.

These three are assessed through a portfolio of work (which is assessed internally by a training provider) there is no test. They are highly valued by employers and by universities.

The remaining key skills which are known as wider key skills are:

  • Working with Others
  • Improving own Learning and Performance
  • Problem Solving.

These three are assessed through an internally assessed portfolio.

There are three main reasons why you will find it helpful to ask perspective employees if they have key skills.

They are:

Key skills underpin everything a person does at work and at home.

  • People communicating all the time.
  • People use IT more and more every day.
  • Numbers are at the heart of much of what we do at home and work.
  • We know people who work well in groups, are well organised, and seem to be able to solve their problems. They are the people who get on best in work, sports and social life.
  • If people can:
  • get better at discussion, speaking, listening and writing
  • find and process information in all its forms
  • use numbers more confidently and
  • get the best out of IT

you will get better employees, whatever the job they are doing.

Similarly

  • Improving Own Learning and Performance help people learn how to manage time and your work and can look for ways of improving their ability to do well in the work you give them.
  • Working with Others shows you how to make the most of group work
  • Problem Solving helps your employee develop a systematic approach to tackling the problems; large and small that will always crop up with work and everyday life.
In a way, key skills are not so new. You have always asked for them. Many are using them already. What's new is that you are being given the chance to ask potential employees to tell you about these skills, the one you want to improve your business.
